Learn some lessons about Light and Life as John Gates shares his insights, humor, and
discoveries from his award-winning career as a Lighting Designer & Consultant. John has been
working with lumens for more than 40 years, helping clients create attractive lighting for their television, film and special event projects.
John has lit six U.S. Presidents, one Pope and a whole bunch of other world leaders, won two Emmy® awards & the top Illuminating Engineering Society Award, is a Life-Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers and has worked in various motion picture formats (film & non-film), including 3D.
His work has appeared on almost every domestic broadcast and cable network and several foreign networks. John founded Gates Service Group, Inc. in 1982 to provide a wide range of lighting related services and solutions for moving image production, including facilities and systems design
for well over 60 construction projects around the world.
John has a long-standing reputation as a teacher, having led more than 100 workshops, seminars and master classes during his career. He is in his 27th year as an Adjunct Lecturer at Boston University’s School of Communication, teaching Lighting and Cinematography.
John is a distinguished former officer in SMPTE, serving as a past New England Section
Chairman, Regional Governor and now a Life Fellow. We are extremely honored to have him make this "Life's Work" presentation.
